What is market intelligence?

It has been said that today’s information economy is on the verge of a grand synthesis — a mashup of data-oriented disciplines that includes market research, business intelligence, competitive intelligence, big data, analytics, and more.  The outcome of that synthesis is market intelligence — a truly complete and comprehensive understand of the marketplace. Translating this information into insights and action is the art and science of data-driven decision-making.

Market intelligence is the raw material for rapidly growing disciplines that are reinventing the process of business, such as analytics, insights and data-driven decision making.  Market intelligence allows for better individual decisions, and by aligning an organization around a single view of the market, it aligns diverse initiatives even in the absence of explicit cooperation.

Today businesses are devoting entire units to market intelligence.  Job titles related to market intelligence are increasingly common. Job listings about market intelligence are proliferating.  Market intelligence increasingly comes in a variety of flavors: Digital intelligence. Social intelligence. Location intelligence.  App intelligence. Etc.
